LAWRENCE, N.J. – The Seton Hall baseball team (14-26) fell to Rider (25-11) on Tuesday afternoon, 11-8. The Pirates have now lost their last four games.
Seton Hall trailed most of the day, falling behind 2-0 after the first inning. The Pirates tied it in the second, but Rider quickly regained the lead. The Broncs pulled ahead by seven runs by the bottom of the seventh. The Hall rallied late, cutting the deficit to three, but couldn’t complete the comeback.
Both pitching staffs struggled throughout the afternoon. Seton Hall cycled through six pitchers, including four in the first three innings. Rider’s bullpen faltered in the ninth, allowing two runs and hitting three batters.
Offensively, sophomore Justin Ford led the Pirates with two hits and reached base in four of five plate appearances. Fellow sophomore Gabe Cavazzoni added two hits and an RBI, while AJ Soldra contributed an RBI triple in the fifth.
The Pirates answered in the top of the second. A double from junior Nick Ferri was followed by a single from freshman Magnus Krieger to put Seton Hall on the board. Krieger later scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Ryan Frontera.
Rider’s offense stayed hot. Alex D’Ambrosio entered in the second for Seton Hall but was replaced by graduate Jordan Marot after loading the bases and surrendering a run. The Pirates trailed 4-2 at the end of the inning.
Seton Hall went scoreless in the third and fourth while Rider extended its lead. The Broncs added a run on a wild pitch in the third and scored again in the fourth. Connor Byrne took over on the mound for the Pirates in the third.
Rider cemented its lead in the bottom of the fifth with a four-run inning. Junior Erich Hartmann reached on a fielder’s choice with two outs, and Joe Tiroly followed with an RBI double to right field, scoring Hartmann and pushing the lead to three. A fielding error by Casey Cumiskey allowed Tiroly to score and put Kyle Neri on base.
Nick Shuhet then launched a two-run homer to right, prompting Seton Hall to return to the bullpen. Jayson Torres entered and ended the inning with a strikeout of Charley Magoulick.
The sixth inning was scoreless, with the Pirates leaving three runners stranded in the top half and Rider’s batters grounding out in order. In the seventh, Torres was replaced by freshman Steven Curry, who surrendered another run to the Broncs.
Seton Hall found offensive rhythm in the late innings. Marco Ali doubled to center and advanced to third on a passed ball. Gabe Cavazzoni followed with an RBI double to bring Ali home. After a groundout by Aiden Robbins moved Cavazzoni to third, he scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 11-6.
The Broncs went three-up, three-down in their final offensive frame. In the top of the ninth, the Pirates loaded the bases but could only score two runs, ending their rally. Silfies struck out Cavazzoni to secure the win.
Seton Hall will look to bounce back at home against Monmouth (20-20) on Wednesday at 4 p.m. Kyle Ferreira and Matt Nazario will have the call.
