SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. — The Seton Hall Pirates (14-22) split their doubleheader against the Creighton Bluejays (20-11) on Sunday, securing a BIG EAST weekend series win.
Game one began on a rough note for Seton Hall as Creighton’s Tate Gillen launched a home run on the first pitch from Cole Hansen. Hansen rebounded to retire the next three batters but allowed another run to Gillen in the second inning via a sacrifice fly that scored Nate McHugh.
The Pirates got on the board in the third when Jimmy Brennan doubled to deep left field, driving in Aiden Robbins. In the fourth, Marco Ali hit a ball down the foul line that brought Joey Calabretti home, tying the game at two.
After the Bluejays took the lead again in the fifth, Brennan responded with another RBI to knot the score at three. Hansen finished with 4.1 innings pitched, allowing four hits and three earned runs on 77 pitches. Stephen Curry relieved Hansen but surrendered four earned runs on three hits and was charged with the loss.
In game two, which began at 1 p.m., Steve Svenson took the mound and pitched five innings, giving up two earned runs and striking out two.
Kevin Milewski opened the scoring with a home run to left field in the second inning, then followed up with a two-RBI single to center that extended Seton Hall’s lead to 3-0. Nick Ferri added a sacrifice fly to bring home AJ Soldra, giving the Pirates a 4-0 advantage.
Creighton responded in the fifth with a sacrifice fly from Nolan Sailors and a home run by Ben North to cut into the lead.
Robbins helped the Pirates bounce back with a solo homer in the sixth, but Gillen and North each went yard again in the seventh, pushing Creighton ahead 6-5.
Despite the Bluejays’ late surge, the Pirates battled back. Milewski singled to bring home Soldra, and Ryan Frontera reached on a fielder’s choice that allowed Gabe Cavazzoni to score on a throwing error by North, sealing the win.
Seton Hall showed resilience and will look to carry that momentum into their next BIG EAST matchup against the UConn Huskies on April 17 in Storrs, Connecticut.
