It's time for another edition of Darren’s Takes! Week 17 was packed with major headlines, including blockbuster trades that shook up the league. The biggest moves? Luka Doncic to the Lakers and De’Aaron Fox to the Spurs. Luka has played two games for Los Angeles so far, with the team going 1-1 in those matchups. While he is still adjusting to his new squad, expect him to regain his Dallas form soon.
Meanwhile, De’Aaron Fox wasted no time making an impact in San Antonio. Now playing alongside Victor Wembanyama, Fox has already become the Spurs' second-leading scorer and a key piece in their rebuild.
Last week also featured the NBA All-Star Game, where Shaquille O’Neal’s team, the OGs, claimed victory. The game had plenty of exciting moments, but it was Stephen Curry who stole the show, earning MVP honors with a dominant performance. Now, as we enter Week 18, it is time to look ahead at some new key matchups and predictions.
Wednesday’s Key Game:
Charlotte Hornets vs. Los Angeles Lakers
The Charlotte Hornets 13-39, 14th in the East come into this game looking to bounce back from a 102-88 loss to the Orlando Magic. Despite their struggles, LaMelo Ball has been a bright spot, leading the team in points 27.7 PPG, assists 7.2 APG, and steals 1.3 SPG. An interesting storyline heading into this game is Mark Williams, who was briefly traded to the Lakers before the deal was rescinded due to a failed physical. That could serve as extra motivation for Charlotte to put up a fight.
On the other hand, the Los Angeles Lakers 32-20, fifth in the West, are coming off a tough 132-113 loss to the Utah Jazz and will be looking to rebound. Even at age 40, LeBron James continues to play at an elite level, now leading the team in scoring with Anthony Davis gone. His new running mate, Luka Dončić, is still getting comfortable in the system, but once they find their rhythm, this duo could be lethal. Alongside Austin Reaves, Rui Hachimura, and Dorian Finney-Smith, the Lakers have the depth to be a serious threat in the West.
Key Matchup: Lamelo Ball vs LeBron James
The key matchup in this game will be LaMelo Ball vs. LeBron James. LeBron is a master at controlling the game through scoring, passing, and defense, while LaMelo thrives in an up-tempo, flashy playstyle. Their contrasting styles make this battle exciting. Can LaMelo push the pace and disrupt the Lakers organized structure, or will LeBron’s experience and versatility prove too much?
Darren’s Prediction: In the end, the Lakers should have the upper hand, as their depth and star power make them the clear favorites. Final Prediction: Lakers 105, Hornets 97.
Thursday’s Key Game
Los Angeles Clippers vs. Milwaukee Bucks
The Los Angeles Clippers 31-23, sixth in the West, enter this game on a three-game winning streak, fresh off a 120-116 victory over the Utah Jazz. Norman Powell was the star in that game, dropping 41 points, further strengthening his case for Most Improved Player. Powell has been having a career-best season, leading the Clippers with 24.2 PPG.
James Harden 21.5 PPG, 8.6 APG has also been a reliable scorer and playmaker, while Kawhi Leonard remains a dominant two-way force. With the recent addition of Ben Simmons, the Clippers have even more defensive versatility, making them a well-rounded squad.
Meanwhile, the Milwaukee Bucks 29-24, fifth in the East, are coming off a 103-101 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves. As always, they are led by Giannis Antetokounmpo, who is putting up MVP-caliber numbers with 31.8 PPG and 12.2 RPG.
Damian Lillard has been a strong secondary option, averaging 25.8 PPG and leading the team in assists (6.8 APG) and steals (1.5 SPG). The midseason addition of Kyle Kuzma has given the Bucks another scoring option, as he is averaging 16.3 PPG through his first four games with the team. With solid depth and star power, Milwaukee is built to compete with anyone.
Key Matchup: Kawhi Leonard vs. Giannis Antetokounmpo
The key matchup here is Kawhi Leonard vs. Giannis Antetokounmpo. Kawhi is one of the best defenders in the league and thrives in mid-range scoring and shot creation, while Giannis dominates with his transition game and relentless attack in the paint. This battle could determine the outcome, as both players, when healthy, have the ability to take over games.
Darren’s Prediction: This should be a tightly contested matchup, but I’m giving the slight edge to the Clippers. With their momentum, depth, and defensive versatility, they should be able to pull off a close victory. Final Prediction: Clippers 120, Bucks 118.
That is it for this week’s Darren’s Takes! Be sure to check back next week for more matchups, predictions, and hot takes. Enjoy the games!
