STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The Seton Hall Pirates (3-1-3) had an intense ending to another 0-0 tie, this time against the Wagner Seahawks (1-1-4) on Thursday evening. Both teams split 11 shots in total, but neither was able to capitalize on them.

Sophomore Avery Strohecker has had an impressive start to the season, only allowing three goals across six matches. However, freshman goalkeeper Kate Kleinsmith made her presence known in her collegiate debut on Thursday.

Wagner took six shots throughout the match, all of which were on goal. Thus, Kleinsmith recorded an impressive six saves, three in each half. Anytime the Seahawks built momentum, the freshman and her defense made big plays to not let them capitalize on their shots.

Five different Pirates took shots to try and get Seton Hall on the board. This included freshman Paige Shaughnessy, who has been a big spark for the Pirates this season.

The best opportunity the Pirates had to get on the board and take the lead, came in the first half. That was when sophomore Olivia Beauvois attempted a shot from outside the penalty area, but Wagner’s Abigail Marcello made the defensive play, keeping the game tied.

The Pirates’ defensive efforts were stout, but feeding off of that momentum offensively became difficult and the game remained scoreless at the half.

The Seahawks were able to produce two threatening shots, to keep the defense disciplined, and the Pirates responded well. Kleinsmith came up with a huge save in the 54th minute after the Seahawks attempted a shot from the penalty area.

Then Kleinsmith flashed more strong play when she came off the line to catch a cross shot that entered a dangerous scoring area. This came at the 68th minute mark, and helped set the tone for the remainder of the contest.

Although Seton Hall displayed a strong performance, both teams should be credited for an excellent defensive showing. The Pirates now earned their third tie and are now 3-1-3 on the season, but have yet to play a conference rival.

The Pirates will remain on the road and travel to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania to play the Lehigh Mountain Hawks on Sunday, September 14th at 1:00 P.M.
