The Seton Hall women’s basketball team is looking to see another step forward from some of their players, one of whom is senior Shailyn Pinkney, who is coming back from injury.
Last season, the Pirates saw progress from Pinkney, as she put up the best numbers
of her collegiate career, averaging 24 minutes per game, 6.4 points, and 3.4 rebounds.
The then-junior was also heating up, putting up some of her best numbers in a Pirates
uniform before she got injured back in December of last year. Some of her highlights
included a career-high 14 points and 4 rebounds against San Francisco, and an impressive
10 points and 7 rebounds against Howard.
Her lower leg injury was originally not expected to be too serious, but ended up sidelining
her for over half of the season. Head Coach Tony Bozzella had said that they expected
her back before New Year's Day, but she did not return for the remainder of the season.
The key for Pinkney was her consistent improvement throughout the course of the season,
with her best games coming before the injury. Another player we saw with a similar
trajectory was Savannah Catalon, who had an excellent sophomore campaign last year.
Seton Hall was denied the opportunity to see if Pinkney would have achieved the same
uptick in performance.
Now looking forward to the upcoming season, the Pirates have had departures in both
guard and forward positions, where Coach Bozzella could deploy her. Pinkney’s most
likely position is one of the forward positions where Seton Hall bid farewell to both
Faith Masonius and Yaya Lops due to their graduation.
There should be a strong belief that the Pirates have not yet seen the best of Pinkney,
and that her full potential could be arriving now in her senior campaign. In what
might be her final season with Seton Hall, Pinkney will be eager to give it her all
out on the court.
