JERSEY CITY, N.J. -- In a highly competitive contest, the Seton Hall Pirates (4-3) prevailed over the St. Peter’s Peacocks (3-4) from the Run Baby Run Arena in Jersey City, New Jersey on Wednesday.
All four sets were evenly matched, with the largest lead of the night only coming
in the closing minutes of the final set. Each team showcased their offensive capabilities,
both teams surpassing 50 kills on the night.
The Pirates had 56 kills on the night led by Sadie Reich (18), Daria Safian (12),
and Senna Roberts-Navarro (8). The Pirates offense also had a whopping .280 hitting
percentage on the night, ultimately coming out on top.
The first set started the same way most of the game went, back and forth, both teams
traded points and short runs until a huge volley towards the end of the set won by
St. Peters gave them the momentum. The set stayed close with each team taking a timeout
until the Peacocks went on a small run that gave them a 25-22 first set victory due
to some mistakes from the Pirates on the defensive side.
The second set turned out to be the best out of the four, with Seton Hall going on
to win 28-26. To start the set, the serve changed hands on 13 consecutive points,
speaking to the competitiveness of the match.
The Pirates called a timeout after falling behind 10-8 to which number 16, Senna Roberts-Navarro
served four straight points to put the Pirates back on top. The Peacocks called a
timeout and were able to get the serve back. Following the timeout, the story continued
the same, with points back and forth until the Pirates eventually took it.
In the third set, neither team led by more than three. Roberts-Navarro got the Pirates
up early, putting the Peacocks in a 3-0 hole to start the set. That lead is one where
the Pirates would not give up throughout the set despite three reviews taking place,
the third the one that ultimately gave the Pirates a 25-22 victory.
The fourth and final set contained similar trends as the others, as both teams went
back and forth, always seeming to have an answer for each other. That was until Emilee
Fuller took over for the Pirates, serving eight consecutive points to give Seton Hall
their biggest lead of the night at 20-14. Backed by a few dominant points by Roberts-Navarro,
the Pirates were able to get the set win, and win the match 3 sets to 1.
The entirety of the match speaks to the resiliency of the Pirates as a team. Despite
the game being a long and back and forth contest, Seton Hall was able to hang in there
and get the win. They will look to keep their momentum going as they will travel to
the Harvard Invitational, first facing off against Washington State on Saturday at
4:00 P.M.
