COLLEGE PARK, MD – The Seton Hall Pirates (5-5) kicked off the Maryland Invitational against the Maryland Terrapins (7-3), but were swept across three tightly contested sets.

The Hall got off to a fast start in the first set, leading 10-4 early off the backs of three kills from Sadie Reich as well as several errors from Maryland.  However, the Terrapins slowly began to claw away at the Pirates lead and with a Reich attack error midway through the set, it was knotted up at 14.

From there, both teams traded punches for the remainder of the set, as they found themselves in a 21-21 tie, but Maryland took the next four out of five points with an Asli Subasili error sealing the deal and giving the Terrapins a 1-0 lead.

The second set featured a lot more back-and-forth, but with Seton Hall leading from the 5-4 mark until Maryland regained the lead at 18-17.  The Terrapins did not relinquish the lead from there, as they closed out set two with a service ace from Lilly Wagner.

Eva Rohrbach led the way for the Terrapins through the first two sets, with eight kills and one service ace, while to no one’s surprise, Reich was doing her best to keep the Pirates in this contest with 13 kills on a .273% hitting percentage.

Seton Hall continued to give Maryland a good fight in the third set, with the largest lead held by either team in this set being three, and it was deadlocked at 23 as the Pirates looked to extend to a fourth frame.  However, back to back kills by Ajack Malual clinched the sweep for the Terrapins.

Despite the loss, Reich dazzled for the Pirates, finishing with 23 kills, four digs, and one ace, while Hanna Labanowska followed her up, notching eight kills, eight digs, and one ace.  Subasili led the Pirates with three service aces, and Gwen Adler tallied the most assists with 29.

Malual and Rohrbach were stellar for the Terrapins, with Malual contributing 11 kills and one service ace, while Rohrbach notched nine kills and one service ace.  Olivia Ruy also chipped in eight kills, while Wagner led Maryland with two aces.

Seton Hall will look to rebound in their second and final game of the Maryland Invitational late Saturday afternoon against Coppin State, with the game set to begin at 4:00 P.M.  Following the conclusion of the Maryland Invitational, the Pirates will return home to begin Big East play next Friday versus Georgetown.
