SOUTH ORANGE, NJ - The Seton Hall Women’s Volleyball team (6-6) opened conference play when they welcomed the Georgetown Hoyas (8-6) to historic Walsh Gymnasium for their BIG EAST opener where they fell short in four sets on Friday evening.
In the first set, it was a battle of runs as there were a total of eight ties in this frame before anyone could take a solid lead. Georgetown got on the board first with a 2-0 lead off an attack error from Maddy Loiselle and a kill from Kamryn Caraci-Lee.
From there, it would go back and forth up until Hanna Labanowska’s kill that would make it 21-18. After the Pirates took this late lead, the Hoyas would come storming back, going on a 6-0 run to make it 24-21.
The Hoyas were on set point, but the Pirates would tally one more to keep things competitive at 24-22. However, Georgetown closed out the set 25-22 off an attack error from Seton Hall.
In set two the Pirates came out with a vengeance going on a 6-0 run early. Loiselle, Labanowski, and Sadie Reich were vital throughout this run, but the attack errors from Georgetown also played a big part.
Georgetown would come all the way back going on a 4-0 run and the game was now 21-20. In the previous set, it was Georgetown who was able to stop Seton Hall’s rally, but this time it was the Pirates who would rally, winning this set 25-21.
The third set was all Georgetown as the Pirates had their fair number of chances in this frame. However, Georgetown never lost the lead in this set. The closest they ever came was 18-17 and at that point Georgetown would talk things over to get back in the game. After that timeout, Georgetown would go on a 7-1 run to win the set 25-18.
The fourth set was a similar chain of events to the first as the Pirates would start with an early 2-0 lead off the attack error from Georgetown and the kill from Reich. Then, the Hoyas would pick up right where they left off and go on an 11-3 run, bringing the score to 11-5.
Seton Hall would go on a run of their own to get back in the game off a key kill from Rowan Carr, and the score was now 18-16. However, the Hoyas would then go on a 7-1 run to seal the set and the match at 25-17.
With the loss, the Pirates now turn their attention to Saturday’s game against Villanova, with Christian Oliveri and AJ Rayer having the call for that game at Walsh Gym starting at 5 p.m.
