The Seton Hall Pirates (2-0-0) defeated the Iona Gaels (1-2-0) by a score of 3-0 in a dominant showing on Thursday night.
Both Iona and Seton Hall were aggressive early on, each team tallying five fouls each
in the first ten minutes. However, the referees left room for them to play through
the physicality. Neither team was able to attempt a shot on goal with both defenses
clamping the opposing side.
After thirty minutes of play, the Pirates finally put a shot on, and were able to
find the back of the net. A key mistake from Iona’s defense in the backfield led to
their goalkeeper, Savannah Rogers, losing sight of the ball, allowing it to roll in
and provide the Pirates with a 1-0 lead.
Seton Hall was two for two on their first shots at Iona’s goal. Paige Shaughnessy
added the second goal. The Pirates’ attack remained strong and continued to be the
aggressors and capitalized on their matchups.
On Iona’s side of the ball, they struggled to get a shot on the Pirates. Their defense
benefited from the break, as the Gaels racked up seven fouls in the first half.
Coming out of the half on a high note, Seton Hall continued to remain strong defensively
early on. The Pirates’ defense picked up where they left off in the first half, as
they shut down Iona the rest of the way despite their three early shots.
Since the second half of the game against Monmouth, Seton Hall’s back line of Olivia
Beauvois, Shea Boyle, Grace Lawler, and Kylie Ray has been phenomenal. They have
refused to surrender, especially quieting Iona’s Sofia Banegas, who could not find
the back of the net on her three shot attempts.
The workload on Avery Strohecker was much to the Pirates’ liking, as she was only
forced to make one save throughout the entirety of the match.
Nina Davis led the attack early on for the Pirates in the second half even though
she did not score. Paige Shaughnessy was there to pick things up offensively once
again, as she netted her second goal of the game.
It was a dominant match for the Pirates and a continuation of their strong momentum
to kick off their season with back to back wins. Seton Hall is back at Owen T. Carroll
Field on Sunday afternoon, looking to keep their early winning streak alive as they
host the Rider Broncos at 5:00 P.M.
