SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall Pirates (22-28, 7-9) took game two in their penultimate BIG EAST series vs the Georgetown Hoyas (14-37, 2-15) Saturday, winning 8-6.
After winning game one on a Kevin Milewski walk-off homer Friday, the Pirates looked to keep the momentum going on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. Early on, the offense was clicking for the home squad.
While the Hoyas had the lead entering the bottom frame of the first, the Pirates answered quickly. With Aiden Robbins at third base, Milewski brought him home following a long at-bat to tie it at one in the first.
Even with the sun beaming down on the Pirates in the second inning, Seton Hall was blazing through the opposing Georgetown squad. The Hall’s starting pitcher Tomas Cestero earned his first strikeout of the day, coming against Jaden Sheffield, son of former Yankee Gary Sheffield.
On the other side of the inning, the Pirates brought home three more runs to grow their lead to 4-1. Marco Ali would be responsible for the two run-single and Justin Ford would get another run with the SAC Fly.
Pitching wise, the right-handed freshman Cestero continued to perform well with two additional strikeouts in the third inning. However, as the game progressed, Georgetown kept inching their way back.
In the fourth inning, the Hoyas’ great hitter Owen Carapellotti would score on a wild pitch and make it 4-2. Georgetown would continue to attack the Pirates with two more hits and another run to make it 4-3 in the fifth.
Understanding the situation, the Hall’s John Downing came in relief of Cestero with one out in the fifth. Downing would then retire the next two batters in the frame.
Entering the sixth inning, the Pirates had to accomplish two tasks. Hold off a Georgetown squad threatening to come back and find more insurance runs. A great throw from Robbins to complete a double play to Milewski to conclude the inning was a start.
The seventh inning saw Downing retire all three batters. On the other side of the inning, Jimmy Brennan singled to bring home AJ Soldra for the Pirate’s first run since the second inning. The great plate discipline from the Pirates was noticeable Saturday as they did not strikeout once through seven.
Even with the Hoyas continuing to march back and making it 5-4 in the eighth, the Pirates showcased their power in the bottom frame. Sophomore Gabe Cavazzoni would blast his first collegiate home run to extend the Pirates lead to 6-4.
Later on in the inning, old reliable Milewski demolished one to left field for his 15th home run of the season. The Pirates would take a 8-4 lead and it would be Milewski’s second homer of the series.
Georgetown’s Kavi Caster made it interesting in the ninth with a two-run home run; but it wasn’t enough as the Pirates earned a crucial victory.
The Pirates’ win Saturday was massive for their BIG EAST Tournament hopes as they look to surpass St. John’s for the last spot.
Seton Hall will look to complete the series sweep vs the Hoyas Sunday at noon. Listen live on 89.5 FM WSOU to follow all the action with pregame coverage starting shortly before first pitch. Michael Federico and Joe Morales will be on the call.
