SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Seton Hall Pirates (21-14) hosted the Army Black Knights (21-14) in a doubleheader Wednesday, outscoring them 17-6 over the two games. The Pirates rallied in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 7-1 victory in the opener before dominating the second game, 10-5.
Seton Hall controlled both matchups, falling behind 1-0 in the first inning of Game 1 before never trailing again. Behind standout performances from Taylor Hill and Andrea Perez, the Pirates dismantled Army’s highly regarded pitching staff.
Hill ignited the offense in Game 1 with a double to tie the score, followed by a Perez single that gave Seton Hall the lead.
The Pirates finished with seven hits in Game 1, with Perez collecting two of them. Over both games, Hill extended her hitting streak to nine games.
Seton Hall’s pitching was dominant in both games, setting the tone early in Game 1. Karissa Dupuis pitched four innings, allowing just one run on four hits. Kyra Kruescher closed out the game, shutting down Army’s offense while allowing two hits. Dupuis earned the win, improving to 2-3 on the season.
Game 2 was all Seton Hall from the start. Freshman starting pitcher Rachael Schumann retired the side in order in each of the first two innings.
Schumann had an impressive outing, allowing four runs and eight hits en route to her first complete game as a Pirate. She earned the win, improving her season record to 5-2.
Offensively, the bats were on fire. In the bottom of the first, Seton Hall jumped out to a 4-0 lead after key hits from Olivia Gilbert, Hill and Perez. By the end of the third inning, the Pirates led 7-0.
In a game full of hits, the middle of the lineup shined. Gilbert, Hill and Perez combined for eight of the Pirates' 11 hits. Perez alone accounted for a third of the team's nine RBIs.
Army’s pitching staff received little help from the defense, as unforced errors proved costly. The Pirates went 6-for-15 with runners in scoring position.
The Pirates are on a three-game win streak and have won their last three series. They have found a groove offensively, and the pitching has been nearly flawless.
As players like Hill, Kelsey Carr, Katey Brennan, and Perez continue to make big leaps, they can also rely on younger players like Erin Howard, Naya Martinez, and Schumann, who all made key plays during Wednesday’s games.
The Pirates' momentum shift this past week is significant as they enter more conference play, aiming for a deep tournament run. They currently sit fifth in the BIG EAST with a 7-5 record.
Seton Hall will look to build on its momentum and climb the standings as it takes on the Providence Friars in Rhode Island this weekend. Game 1 of the series is set for Friday at 4 p.m.
